Information On Breast Augmentation Michigan Clients Should Know

By Janet West

Cosmetic surgery is a field that has continued to grow in leaps and bounds in Southfield. Mammoplasty or breast augmentation is one of the operations that are conducted frequently. The demand for this type of operation appears to be growing tremendously over time. The main driving factor for this is the effect of the media. If they wish to have breast augmentation Michigan patients need to learn a number of things on the procedure.

There are a number of other indications of mammoplasty apart from the cosmetic reasons. Abnormally small breasts may be seen in some cases of developmental disorders. This is referred to as mammary hypoplasia. It is corrected by increasing the amount of tissue with the breasts or inserting prosthesis. The other reason as to why the same may be needed is effecting a sex change (when a feminine appearance is desired).

Two main types of prosthesis that are used in this procedure. Both have a similar outer shell made of rubber and only differ in the content. The first is pre-filled with silicone which gives it a natural consistency that is similar to the natural breast. Placing it in position requires large surgical incisions because it is less malleable. The second type is filled with saline once in position. It is more flexible and allows for smaller incisions.

In preparing for the operation, there are a number of things that have to be done. Undergoing a physical examination and having some blood tests help in risk assessment. The presence of liver or renal disease or bleeding disorders may mean that the procedure be delayed until such conditions have been managed. If one is a smoker or if they are on drugs that may affect coagulation, they are advised to stop them for about two weeks before and after the surgery.

Being a major operation, general anesthesia is usually used. What this means is that you will be put to sleep and only awakened after the operation has been completed. The area in which the prosthesis is placed can be accessed in several ways. The commonest approach is the area beneath the breast but above the crease. Others are the areolar area and the armpit. Once the implant is in place, stitching is done.

Complications related to this operation may be related to the surgery itself or the implant. Surgical complications are rare and include excessive bleeding, injury to adjacent structures and infections. Complications that may arise from the implant are fairly common and include leakage of the gel, displacement (leading to asymmetry), implant rupture and crease formation.

Recovery occurs within a few days. You will be discharged home on pain relievers and antibiotics to be used for one or two weeks. The general recommendation is that strenuous exercises should be avoided especially in the immediate post-operative period to allow the wound to heal well. The handling of breasts should also be done with caution.

The results of breast augmentation vary from one client to another due to a number of factors. Such will include, for instance, the type and severity of the problem, the skill of your surgeon, the client age and the presence or absence of complications after surgery. Remember that with time, the shape will change due to the pulling effect of gravity and a second operation may be needed for restoration.
