Some Facts Concerning Total Laser Resurfacing

As we grow older, some of the most dramatic changes are seen on the skin. The skin becomes thinner making scars, superficial lines and wrinkles more prominent. Similar effects may be seen when the skin is exposed to the sun for prolonged periods of time. Total laser resurfacing is one of the available treatments in Cincinnati, OH that can be used to deal with this problem. It is associated with a number of advantages that include less pain, fewer side effects and rapid results.

Wrinkling and superficial lines are the results of old and damaged collagen tissue. The tissue is located within the dermis layer of the skin. A laser beam is used to damage the collagen further so that newer collagen fibers can grow. The growth occurs over the next few weeks and month to crater smoother, more youthful skin. Usually, the epidermis which is the most superficial skin layer, is unaffected.

There is no strict criteria that is used to choose candidates to undergo the treatment. Anyone who desires a more youthful appearance of their skin is a potential candidate. There are several medications that should be stopped for some time before the exercise. These include aspirin, vitamin E and blood thinners. All these drugs and supplements increase the chance of bleeding. Smoking delays recovery and should be stopped for some time as well.

The resurfacing procedure is usually done in the office and there is usually no need for admission. There is not much in terms of preparation that needs to be done. Since there may be a bit of discomfort or pain, topical anesthesia or light sedation may be administered. The whole exercise lasts for a period of 30 minutes to one hour depending on the area of skin to be treated.

There is inter-individual variation in the number of sessions that are required. For a majority of persons one session is needed to produce the required results. If the initial problem is severe, there is a need for additional treatments. The sessions for these treatments are usually organized at six week intervals. The duration is meant to facilitate the regeneration of collagen fibers before the additional treatments are given.

The time that is required to heal is variable and is determined by the depth of the peel. Generally, the average person would require between 3 and 7 days. Within minutes of having the procedure, they may have itchiness and a sunburn sensation. A residual red or pink color may be seen in lighter skin tones. These patches can, fortunately be covered using makeup.

While you do not dressings for the skin during recovery there are a number of products that may be of benefit. Such products include hyper emollient creams, antibiotics and sun blocks. If you have a problem with the residual red colored patches make up may come in handy. Persons with darker skin often notice dark pigments which may be quite unsightly. One of the ways of dealing with this is to use a bleaching agent.

The results of laser resurfacing tend to vary from one individual to another. The success or failure will be determined by the severity of the condition. One needs to adjust their expectations in line with the nature of their problem.
