Basics Relating To Breast Implants Merrillville Indiana Clients Should Know

By Dorothy Sullivan

Breast augmentation (also referred to as mammoplasty) is a surgical operation that is performed mainly for cosmetic operations. It may also be used therapeutically such as in breast construction after trauma or extensive cancer. The procedure is facilitated by use of special prosthesis. If they plan to have the operation there are a number of things on breast implants merrillville indiana residents should know.

There are two main types of prostheses that can be used: the saline implants and the silicone implants. The saline implants are usually filled with saline and are more malleable. The silicone type, on the other hand, contain silicone gel and are less malleable. Their main advantage is that they have a more natural feel. This means that a larger incision is needed with the silicone than the saline type.

There are different sites through which the prosthesis can be inserted. They include the area under the arm (axillary region), beneath the breast and below the areola. An incision is first made in the chosen area and the breast separated from the underlying muscles and connective tissue. This helps create a pocket in which the implant can be placed. Silicone implants are prefilled with silicone gel while the saline implants are initially empty and are filled once in position.

The surgery can be done in an inpatient or outpatient facility. General anesthesia is commonly used with local anesthesia being reserved for selected cases. The appropriate incision is made, the implant placed in position and stitching done. The entire exercise typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes. As soon as the anesthesia wears off, you can be released to go home (usually the same day).

You should be aware of the likely complications that you may encounter during the procedure. Those that may be seen in the short term include infections, nerve injury and bleeding. Those that are likely to be experienced in the long term include rupture of the implants, leakage of saline or silicone gel, altered nipple sensation and scarring among others. It is important that you consider the likelihood of these complications with your surgeon beforehand.

Bear in mind that the results of augmentation are not the same for all patients. While some are happy with what they look like after the procedure, others are unsatisfied and may even demand a repeat. The differences that are seen are attributable to factors such as type of implant used, the technique employed and the nature of the initial problem. You need to adjust your expectations based on your condition.

As you leave the facility, your wounds will be dressed and you may also have drains inserted. These drains facilitate the flow of excess tissue fluid. They are removed as soon as they have served their purpose which is usually within a few days. You may notice swelling and pain but these will resolve spontaneously over time. Over the counter pain relievers can be used to provide relief.

Apart from being an adult above the age of 18 years, there is not much in terms of criteria that has to be fulfilled. What is important is that you obtain as much information from your surgeon as possible. The surgeon should present you with all the available options including the techniques, type of implant, size, shape and so on. If you are a smoker, you will be well advised to stop the habit two months in advance at the very latest.
