Find A Good Joint Mobilization Therapy Expert

By Rosella Campbell

Sometimes, aches and pains seem to spring out of the blue. Joint mobilization therapy is the manual intervention of passive movement to the skeletal joint. It is aimed at the synovial joint which is the part that has the most movement in the human body. The difference between cartilaginous and fibrous joints is in the function and structure as well as the existence of capsules surrounding the surfaces and the presence of fluid within the synovial cavities.

Articular capsule is an envelope that surrounds the synovial joint and each of these has two layers. The outer or the stratum fibrosum is made up of avascular white fibrous tissue. The next is the inner or stratum which is a secreting layer and is normally described as the synovial membrane. The fibrous membrane is attached to the whole circumference of the articular end of the bone entering the joint. These are made up of dense irregular connective tissue.

A gliding or plane type is the carpals of the wrist and has a sliding movement between the vertebrae. The hinge is the elbow and this is more like a door hinge that allows extension and flexion. The condyloid joints are where two bones fit together with an odd shape; one is concave the other convex. These joints allow for adduction, abduction extension and flexion movements.

A saddle type is typical of the thumb and allows the same movement at the condyloid but with greater mobility. The ball and socket joints better known as the universal one is found by the hip and shoulders, this allows for all movements except for the gliding. The knee joints or compound, have the saddle and condylar joints combined.

This form of therapy is to reduce pain in any joint which has resulted from injury or becoming old. A qualified practitioner is the only one that should do this kind of therapy as it can cause more harm than good if not done properly. When this has been done you might even be told to do some form of exercise so that it does not become worse over time.

Joint therapy is done by slowly bringing the joint through a small and precise range of motion. This is done very slowly and never involves a fast thrust which is normal for chiropractors. It focuses on loosening the deeper ligaments and capsules. Stretching of muscles is invaluable in helping to increase the flexibility of most of the soft tissues as well.

The ankles are the most used joints in the body and tend to be the most that give pain of some kind. They have three different joints associated with them; the talocrural, subtalar and the inferior tibiofibular joint. If one is unlucky enough to cause injury to any of these joints and need to wear a brace or tape this can cause them to actually weaken and thus limiting its full range of movement.

With mobilization therapy, this can be corrected but can take up to a few months. It is a method of slowly bringing the joints back into motion without any fast actions. Always ask your doctor before you start any exercises especially if you have had a previous injury.
