How To Qualify As A Bay Area Plastic Surgeon

By Ina Hunt

Plastic surgeons are medical professionals who concentrate on the outward appearance of their patients, rather than physical ailments. They are able to shape and recreate different areas of the body such as the ears, face and hands to make them look more like the patient wants. In some cases they also fix congenital problems like malformed bones or scarring from injuries. Cosmetic surgery can reshape a particular body part for aesthetic reasons. Constructive surgery can repair or replace a body part lost or damaged by accident or illness. There are many steps you will have to take to become a bay area plastic surgeon.

These professionals must be very driven and focused in order to get through the many years of schooling that is required. They will also have to be prepared to work long hours. A surgeon is a licensed medical doctor trained in trauma care and basic surgery techniques. They can also specialize in certain areas such as laser surgery and body contouring.

John Mettauer was the first American plastic surgeon. In 1827, he performed the first operation on a cleft palate using surgical instruments he designed himself. However, Sir Harold Gillies is generally considered to have been the father of modern plastic surgery. He performed a flap surgery on a sailor injured in battle named Walter Yeo in 1917, who is believed to be the first person to undergo cosmetic surgery.

In cosmetic surgery, a common procedure is called skin grafting, which involves the transfer of skin tissue from one area to another. A skin graft can be taken from the recipient or from a donor. Autografts are grafts taken from a recipient and allografts are taken from a donor. These surgical procedures require careful planning of where to make the incisions along the natural line of the skin folds. This is also important for closing wounds and exposed sutures to promote the best wound healing.

Once you complete your bachelors degree, you must earn your Doctor of Medicine (M. D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D. O.). A doctor of medicine degree is a four year education and training program. In the first two years, you will be doing both classroom study and laboratory work in the program. The last two years will involve you completing work in a hospital or clinic. This is to give you clinical experience in the field.

Many women choose to get Botox treatments because they are unhappy with their physical appearance. By using surgical applications of these injections, which consist of small doses of the toxin, it is possible to prevent wrinkles from appearing by paralyzing the facial muscles of the patient. Botox should only be administered by a properly certified plastic surgeon.

After doing a residency, some physicians choose to undertake a fellowship, so that they can specialize in a certain area of cosmetic surgery, such as facial or breast reconstruction. By this time, however, most of these physicians will be capable of surgically treating a variety of congenital problems of the head, neck and body, as well as burn management.

If you want to enter this field, make sure you spend plenty of time researching the courses and programs you will have to complete. Also check into the relevant certifications for this profession. Most of these surgeons receive their certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery as well as state certifications.
