It is important to stay upright while you eat and for two or three hours after you eat as well. If you recline or lie down, acid can go up the esophagus easier since gravity is not keeping it down. Your esophagus can feel better by standing up or sitting up.

Elevate your head above the bed. You can raise your bed with bricks or wood blocks. The head of your bed should be elevated six to eight inches above the foot. If you elevate your head and chest, you could stop the rise of stomach acid while you sleep.

You don't want to wear restrictive clothing. Pantyhose, waistbands and tight belts are usual suspects. These clothes not only restrict movement, but they put excess pressure your stomach. This pressure can cause heartburn and reflux. Wear clothes that are looser around your middle and offer more comfortable.

After meals, chew on a piece of cinnamon gum. Saliva production is increased when you chew. This will neutralize stomach acids. Also, chewing gum causes people to swallow, which helps clear away acid from the esophagus. If not cinnamon gum, fruit flavors work as well. Mint flavored gum causes the esophageal sphincter to relax, adding to the problem.
